Understanding Guitar Tablature Guitar Tab is an interesting thing, it looks complicated but makes the guitar one of the easiest instruments to get instantly playing. Ok, so Tab.. First of all, the 6 lines you see above illustrate each string of the guitar. See how the B is on the bottom lines? and how the T is on the top lines? The B I always looked at as to say Bass (Lowest in Pitch) which would be the thickest string on guitar.. the string closest to you. so the bottom line we now know is the Bass E string. The top line of Tab, is a T which could stand for Treble (Highest Pitch) Which is the string furthest away from you, the highest sounding & thinnest string. Which is known as the high E string. Now you know what string is what, the next step is remembering the name of each string. From Bass to Treble it would spell out. The next step would be the numbers. any number higher than 0 would mean you “fret” a note. any string with a 0 on it, just means you pluck the string with no fretted note.

The top line of Tab, is a T which could stand for Treble (Highest Pitch)
Which is the string furthest away from you, the highest sounding & thinnest string.
Which is known as the high E string.

Now you know what string is what, the next step is remembering the name of each string.
From Bass to Treble it would spell out.

E, A, D, G, B, E

The next step would be the numbers.
any number higher than 0 would mean you “fret” a note.
any string with a 0 on it, just means you pluck the string with no fretted note.

Fretting a note is when you apply pressure onto the string just before one of the pieces of metal running across the fretboard.

for instance, if you saw on your Tab sheet, Second line from the top with a 3 on it.
That would mean you fret just behind the third piece of metal across the fretboard on the B string.
Make sense?

if not, do not hesitate to contact me personally or wait for a video lesson on this to be uploaded.

Guitar Picks: Guitar picks range in thickness, size, shape & material. so a simple task like purchasing a guitar pick, can soon become daunting. Thickness: Thin Picks have a lot of flexibility, so tend to sound nicer, not so harsh, great for beginners learning to strum, but may cause poor technique as the beginner guitarist will get used to hitting however hard they wish without hearing harsh consequences. Medium Picks I recommend these most of all to the beginner guitarist, they are in-between thin & thick, as the name would suggest. they bring a good amount of flex to not cause too strong contact with the strings and making it sound horrific when the learner is getting used to holding & using the pick, but are hard enough to let the beginner hear when they are hitting too hard therefore aiding the learner to listen to the difference in their own picking/strumming technique. Thick Picks My personal preference are thick, I have been playing for a few years & understand the difference a pick can make, I like to play fast, pick light, but I also need something to take the strain I will put it through. Thick picks are great to play fast with because they don’t shift around like thin picks (although you can get a lot of speed out of thin picks also) I can control the thin pick to also sound very soft and gentle, with time & experience on your instrument, you will also. My opinion & advice to ...

Thick picks are great to play fast with because they don’t shift around like thin picks (although you can get a lot of speed out of thin picks also) I can control the thin pick to also sound very soft and gentle, with time & experience on your instrument, you will also.

My opinion & advice to all students & beginner guitarist’s is to try out with medium picks for the first few months, once you feel ready & are able to pick the guitar gently & harshly, then experiment with other picks to find what suites you! after all, we all have our own preferences & are unique, even down to the pick.
